Department of Linguistics

Department of Linguistics was established by Acharya Gaurinath Sashtri in 1960. Initially the department offered Pass (General Course) in Linguistics. The Honours course was introduced in 1964 by Dr. Paresh Chandra Majumdar, Dr. Bhakti Prasad Mallik and Dr. Munishwar Jha. The department has been enriched by the presence of these great teachers as well as eminent academicians. The department also had genius and outstanding scholars over the years. Some notable personalities among them are Dr. Shyamsundar Bhattacharya, Dr. Krishna Bhattachaya, Dr. Probal Dasgupta, Dr. Debaprasad Bandyopadhyay, Dr. Mina Dan, Dr. Abhijit Majumdar, Dr. Upal Sen, Dr. Anita Bandyopadhyay, Dr. Samir Karmakar, Dr. Sunandan Sen, Dr. Sanjukta Ghosh who have extensively contributed in the field of Linguistics not only in India but also in abroad. Many other scholars and students of this department are successfully placed in different professional ground. Department of Linguistics has framed a distinguished history in Indian academics.

Department of Linguistics was primarily affiliated to Calcutta University Academic System and it continued to run under The Sanskrit College and University since 2017.
